ok, I am just going to come out and say it. I am a 5 foot 11 inch 16 year old female, and I weight 280 pounds. I am so tired of my health problems, so now I want to make a change! I know. . . Being over weight is my own fault. I am so lazy. I hate doing anything that involves physical exertion. That and my eating habits are clouding my chances at having a good senior year next year! For diet, I'm no expert, but try to eat things closest to how God originally made them. Nuts, vegetables, fruit, fish..all very healthy. And drink only water if you can, and maybe the occasional apple or orange juice. Eat only 3 or 4 times a day. Also, brush your teeth after each meal or snack. Something about having a lasting food taste in our mouths makes us want to eat more.For fitness, I'd like to think that I'm much closer to an expert. Running is always the best for slimming down, but it may be intimidating to you. Try just jogging in place in your living room for 10 minutes without stopping while you watch tv. No need for shoes, fancy clothes, people watching. There's no way to procrastinate. Just jump up and do it. During the commercials on tv, do small quick excercises, like jogging in place or high kicks. You also need to try to get in each muscle group worked out every day. Here's a list of the best, no equipment needed exercizes for each group:
Back of arms (triceps): Put your hands on a low surface (like a couch or the bottom step of the stairs) and put your feet together on the ground in front of you. Lower your body to where your bottom almost touches the floor, and lift back up. Do 20 reps a day.
Arms and chest: Do pushups. Not girl pushups. Do 10 a day.
Abs. Here's the doozy for girls. Do ALL of these a day if you eventually want a flat stomach. :
1. Regular crunch. Lie on the floor with your hands behind your head and lift your shoulder blades off the ground. Don't let your chin hit your collarbone. 40 reps a day.
2. Side crunches. For left, assume same position as regular and bring right elbow to left knee. For right do the reverse. Do 20 reps of each a day.
3. Lower ab crunches. Lie on your back with your feet straight above you in the air and touch your toes. 20 reps a day.
4. Lower ab side crunches. (After you've lost some weight, you can replace this for Side crunches (#2) some days.) Assume position of lower ab crunches and reach for the space beside left foot 20 times, then right 20 times (daily).
5. Vertical cut crunches. (Also add this in after you've lost some. Don't want to overwhelm you at first.) Lie on your side. Prop yourself up on the elbow and knee closest to the ground, letting the other leg and arm extend straight. Pull the extended arm towards your back, 10 reps a day on each side.
Hips: Lie on your side and pull one leg up until its perpendicular with the floor. 50 reps each side.
Butt: Lie on your back with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Raise your pelvis. 40 reps.
Butt and legs: Get on your hands and knees. Lift your bended leg. 20 reps each leg.
Legs: Again, get on your hands and knees. Straighten one leg. Lift it. 20 reps each leg.
Inner thighs: Lie on your back with your legs bend and your knees straight up, your feet not touching the floor. Lower your knees to the sides of you til they almost touch the floor, and bring them together again. 50 reps.

Hi. Ok I am a 13 yr. old girl. 5'6 and 160 pounds. I would love to lose weight. It's not because I want to be skinny. It's because I have know about the dangers of being over weight. The doctor won't do ANYTHING and my parents are unsupportive and won't help me. Can someone please help? I don't just want to be skinny though. I want muscle and strength. I feel like I'm carrying something heavy all the time because of all this weight. I can't go online and order stuff or pay to join a club because I don't have money or a bank account. I'm athletic though. I LOVE sports. I'm about to go into High School also next year also. I always hear people whisper behind my back "look at the fat girl" and it hurts. I have joined all the free weight loss sites and I have tried everything but no weight comes off! I have no support or someone to tell me what to do. I would love to have a personal trainer that was there and asked me how I worked out today and how to improve it but I don't. You sound like a pretty girl. I am 3 inches shorter than you and I'm 160 lbs too. Don't feel so bad. I am 24 though, but I don't consider myself fat. Well I've lost and gained weight since I was a teenager. I think my best advice would to be to give a shot at being active. Whatever is easiest for you. If you like dancing, you can join a dance club in school. Or you can always join the YMCA. They are cheap and sometimes free, just call and ask if they have free memberships for kids? I think they have classes, and just take a different fitness class every day for an hour a day. I like jogging/walking on a treadmil while I watch TV. Because then I forget I'm working out, and I'm watching my favorite show. You sound tall too. Do you like basketball? Sports are a great way to make friends and to stay in shape without thinking about it too much. Don't worry so much, just get out and have fun. Ride bikes with your friends too.

you need to eat less and exercise more, that's it, you can't do it fast, it takes as long as it takesweight watchers would give you a good way to track all the biscuits etc.
and I dislike gyms but circuit classes etc. make you lose weight easily enough without all the 'having to motivate yourself' thing

with the way i eat it is dieting to me ^_^ when i say dieting i mean actually eating a good breakfast lunch and dinner, no snacking on junk, if i feel hungry im going to have a little fruit or veggies and water, if im bored and craving food im going out for a walk.

In the meantime start walking everyday 3 - 4 times for 20-30 minutes.
Dieting is difficult if you love food, so get help at Overeaters Anonymous as I said above.

Do you think atkins or low gi will be better?
I have pcos so its harder to lose weight, also certain foods have a funny affect on me.
I've not really tried any diet to be honest for a period of time, i just try bits of this or that.
My dietician at my gp said things like the atkins weren't necessary but that i should reduce the amount of starchy foods in portion size and make sure they are wholemeal or wholegrain etc. Also she said i should look at labels and not eat foods with over 10 grams sugar or 5-8grams of fat per 100grams and that by doing this i will reduce calorie intake anyway, without her giving me a calorie count.
Everytime i read about diets i feel terrible and struggle to think how i'll cope trying to follow any, plus its not nice when people make nasty comments, had one just lastnight cos a argument broke out when we were out, and this guy called me a fat bitch charming!
I see parts of diets and think oh i can do that, but then its following the whole thing otherwise it won't work.
Someone said because of the pcosand its link with insulin resistance i should folllow low carb/low gi diet, the atkins is just rediculous to me and although many health professionals have said the weight loss you see in people is astonishing, and that even though you do add things in at a later date as you go along, its too restrictive.
I 've tried versions of low gi, when i did it propely i lost 3lb in a couple of days, but not sure of it and if it works as the green foods seems you can have as much as you like, and one gi diet included snickers bars! but said in brackets high fat so assuming they are saying even though its on the green list don't consume too often maybe.
Also looked at slimming world, they show you a online 7 day diet, foods in bold that are down for that day you can eat as much as you like, plus there are free foods, i suppose maybe if you go there it does say you can make up your own plan doesn't have to be there one, but the meals/snacks would have to be measured well some as they do still state measurements for some things, have any of you tried slimming world.
Although the atkins is all about net carbs etc, some girls have told me they just cut there intake of carbs as a whole but allowed themselves abit more than the atkins does and lost loads,but does this mean i could still eat some good carbs but also bad ones too if i cut down on them? The carb count on packets says 230grams a day this is on a normal diet under 2000 calories, and of which sugars says 90grams, so if i were to cut my carb intake should i just cut the whole 230gram figure in half or cut down starch figure and sugar seperatly as it would seem 230grams of which sugars being 90grams means they are allowing you more for starch, makes it 140grams for starch 90grams for sugar.

My main concern for myself and you is health. I do not recommend Atkins for vanity reasons but for optimal health (losing weight is just a nice bonus). As long as you keep your carbs under 9grams an hour you will have your body in optimal mode for health & healing and shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin (the fat storage hormone) is not triggered.The main reason that I specifically advocate Atkins is that it literally transforms your body. You lose the carb addiction and you can see a huge difference without the addiction. Your body completely works different, you are hungry for food not carbage, you want vegetables & proteins and foods that fuel the body. You can tell that carbs degenerate the body & fats regenerate it. Reading recommendations are one thing but when you KNOW what is best for your body and know that you've been lied to by nutritional advisors. It makes you angry.
I wondered how not only educated persons but persons specifically educated in nutrition are promoting sugar as a food essential to health but I now know that anyone that goes against the current regulations can lose their license and be sued for malpractice (even though what they are doing IS malpractice but it's accepted practice - sigh).
I followed the USDA dietary recommendations low fat, adequate protein, high carb, lots of fresh fruits & veg and kept getting sicker & fatter. My adrenal glands quit working, my thyroid wasn't working properly, I was doing everything I thought was right & kept getting worse. My doc was freaking out about high triglycerides & cholesterol and I just refused to do the drugs.
6 years ago, I started Atkins low carb way of eating to just quit gaining weight. I had to get my out of control appetite under control. I never imagined I could LOSE weight without hunger or exercise, since I've become disabled. I never bothered weighing or measuring til I'd noticed that my clothes got huge quick. When my health improved dramatically also, I knew this was my new way of life and since it's eat all you want (of low carb foods) I know I can do this for life.
My personal carb level is low. I am older & disabled & don't move much (or cook much) but I eat all I want of meats, eggs, cheeses, yogurt, fats, green vegetables, almonds, berries, flax seeds, chia seeds, shirataki noodles and other foods. Someone active would have a MUCH higher carb level & can usually include all fruits, beans, whole grain products but not sugar & highly refined carbs in unlimited amounts. As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories.
Overweight & obese people have blood sugar & insulin dysfunctions and can NEVER eat carbs as someone with a functioning body can. They make the mistake of going back to the way of eating that made them fat and that is not possible and yes they will gain all weight back if they eat what they ate that made them obese originally. Insanity is defined as doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way and expecting different results. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.
