* It also detoxifies your whole body before starting the plan.

Drawbacks

* Dr. Ian Smith's 4 day diet may not be liked by those who do not want to follow a certain routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What do you think is really the healthiest (not for weight loss but good health) diet? Vegetarian or Primal?
Nutrition is soo confusing- trying to figure out which is best for overall health (not just weight loss) vegetarian or an eating plan similar to Primal Blueprint (heavy on plants and meats-grain free, dairy free)

    • ANSWER:
Any diet that meets your daily nutritional needs is healthy. Some diets make it more difficult than others. For example, vegetarians may not get enough protein, zinc, iron, calcium and vitamin B12. However, if they eat enough beens and leafy greens, they can get all of these micro-nutrients, except vitamin B12, which you cannot get from plants. Vitamin supplements may be needed if your diet restricts too many food groups.

  2. QUESTION:
Best weight loss diet for busy vegetarian mom?
I am a busy young mom with 3 kids, ages 3, 2, and 4 months. I have gained a lot of weight in my pregnancies and would like to lose about 80 pounds. I want to lose it slowly and healthfully. I do not have the time or money to join a gym, and do not have the child care. Also, I can not afford to buy any exercise equipment or expensive pills/gadgets etc. What are some healthy diet plans that are vegetarian friendly, and what are good exercises for targeting belly fat. PS-I do not need to hear "eat less exercise more." I need specific routines and referrals to eating plans that work for my lifestyle. I also need to know what kind of exercises to do and when/how to do them, plus some healthy foods that will satisfy my sweet tooth. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      Hi!

Have you ever heard about "Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet"? Reading about it makes you wonder if they might not be on to something. The way the diet works is different than other fad diets that involve cutting out certain types of food like low carbohydrates, low fat or low calorie. Instead it uses calorie shifting foods that you would normally eat, increases the number of times you eat, and changes when you eat certain things for fast fat loss.

      What is Calorie Shifting?

The way calorie shifting works involves tricking the fat hormones that are sent out by the brain. Every time you eat something, your brain sends out fat storing and fat burning hormones, depending on what the item is.

The idea is to send more fat burning than fat storing hormones, so that the body does not hold onto the fat for later use. If you keep confusing the metabolism, you will see fast fat loss, as much as 9 pounds in 11 days, that is the first weightloss principle of Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet.

How Does The Metabolism Control Weightloss?

This scientific weight control fact about the metabolism and how it works stems from our ancestry as cavemen, when there were famine periods between hunts. The body would store and hold onto fat for survival. The metabolism has not evolved from this self-defense tactic and doesn't realize we can just run to the grocery store and get whatever we want.

On restrictive diets, weightloss can plateau when the metabolism thinks it is experiencing a famine period, and it will only burn what is taken in. Even on some of the popular low carbohydrate diets, it is advised to eat pizza for two days when your weight plateaus to get the metabolism going.

Why Do Some Weightloss Diets Leave You With No Energy?

The only problem with many of these restrictive weightloss diets is the metabolism goes back to only burning what you take in and many people complain about being tired and worn down, when it is mainly the metabolism storing up the energy for later.

By eating healthy, nutritious foods that are fat burning, the metabolism burns as much energy as you need. Many people on restrictive weightloss diets will regain the weight when they go back to eating normal foods.

What Is The Best Diet For Weightloss?

The best weight control diet allows you to eat the foods that you would normally eat, have in your refrigerator and cabinets. By timing when you eat certain foods, how many times a day you eat them, and balancing the types of food, your metabolism will burn what you take in and then some, because it knows you will be feeding it again shortly, instead of starving.

Prepackaged fat loss products and frozen dinners are not something you can live on the rest of your live. You need to understand the basics of natural weight control, and Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet uses the fundamental principles of controlling the metabolism with calorie shifting normal foods you eat every day.

Check my source, it might help. It's a diet that works. Good luck!

  6. QUESTION:
What is the best weight loss diet plan?
I am 17 years old, female. Prom is coming up in 3 months and I put on about 10 pounds over the summer that I want to take off plus a little bit more. I am 5’0 and 119 pounds. What I want to lose most, other than all around is my love handles, stomach (#1), butt (sticks out =/), and my arms are a little too fat for my body.

I am planning on going to the gym everyday for about 1.5-2 hours and eating healthy, however, I need a little help with following it and what would be beneficial and what wouldn’t.

I went to the gym today, for the first time for this diet plan/weight losing plan. I did the treadmill for 5ish minutes fast walking (warm-up/cool down) and about 10 minutes running (not SO fast, but running) and then did the sitting bike for 10 minutes/1.5 miles. It was my first day so I didn’t do much.

I am planning on eating healthy so it helps with my weight loss as well and my face.

I plan to eat Special K cereal with 1% milk in the morning (615 AM)
Lunch at school: apple and water? If I should eat more, maybe a sandwich (wheat bread with a slice of cheese since I’m a vegetarian, would that be healthy?) (1030 AM)
100 calorie pack? Or a granola bar would be healthier? (12-2ish, anytime between there)
Dinner: Indian food, but healthy, like soups and veggies.
Snacks during the day: apples, plums, oranges/tangerines/clementines, watermelon.
6 bottles of water per day.
    Not eating after 7 PM.

I am planning to go to the school gym right after school from 230-3 and then come home and go to my gym by my house from 345-5?
What machines should I do? And how long about? (How do I keep myself from getting bored=( lol)
Also like on treadmill/elliptical should I do incline/hill, if it makes a difference?

Also I have a bit of acne on my face. Will exercising and eating like that help clear it up?

When will I see results? And is it possible to lose a bit of love handles/stomach/arm fat in about less than 3 months?

Thank you so much and if you have any other experience suggestions/ideas please help. If anything is unhealthy (foods that I listed) or exercises that will not help/help please tell me, thank you =)

If you ever did a diet/exercise plan that worked/is working in about 3 months, please tell.

Wow, i actually took the time to read all that.

"Also I have a bit of acne on my face. Will exercising and eating like that help clear it up?"

Yes, think of it this way, instead of eating chips & soda, you'd be eating fruits & vegetables & drinking water... which has very little oil compared to junk food.

Specifically, sweating will open your pours up and you can wipe away all the oil pretty much. What you want to do after you sweat is rince your face with cold water.

"When will I see results? And is it possible to lose a bit of love handles/stomach/arm fat in about less than 3 months?"

You'll probably see results after a week, but your starting from square one, so it will take your body some time to get into shape but if you eat right & watch your calories, the lbs will be shedding off.

"What machines should I do? And how long about? (How do I keep myself from getting bored=( lol)"

I too have workout ADHD, so this is what id recommend:

Cardio workout for the out of shape:
Day 1: 10 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bicycle. (30 mins total)
Day 2: 15 minutes of treadmill and elliptical. (30 mins total)
Day 3: 10 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike & just 5 minutes of stair stepper. (35 mins total)
Day 4: 15 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bike (45 minutes total)
Day 5: 15 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, then 5 minutes of the stair stepper with an additional 5 minutes of jumping rope. (50 mins total)

As you begin to get more fit, more confident in your physical health, you can begin to increase your total workouts by 5 minutes and the intensity by an extra level.

Good luck! You can make those other b*tches jealous if you stay motivated.

  9. QUESTION:
Help with my diet and weight loss?
-Well, I'm 14 and about 5'9 and 135 pounds. Im currently like a size 8 in jeans and i want to be a 5. I have probably a medium bone structure. I have reached probably 160 pounds in the summer, and have slimmed down.

-I'm really NOT happy with my weight right now, but have successfully went from 160 pounds to 135. So I'm happy with that kind weight loss.

-My goal is probably 125, depending on how i look at that weight.

-I've been eating a couple egg whites for breakfast, some yogurt and no more than a 200 calorie snack during the day, and a 150 calorie dinner. It has really worked with getting the weight off, because I have always told my self I would diet, and finally am.

-I know the calories are low, but i need to loose it now! I feel like my weight loss has slowed down, because my weight is the exact same as last week.

-I TRY to take 2 jogs a week, do 45 minutes of yoga 2 times a week, and 2 bike rides a week. I am hoping to start going to gym once during weekends, because I have school and stuff, but I need some tips. I want to for sure loose weight off my thighs, butt, and hips, (so I can wear a smaller jean size) ...

-I also need help in the stomach area. I have a small waist and a strong stomach, but i do have what I call an "innertube. The area of fat around my belly button and love handles, making it look like an innertube around my waist. This makes me look pretty bad in even basic t shirts... so how should I take care of this? fast?

-So what are the best exercises to do and machines to use?

-I just need general help on how to reach my goal, stay motivated, maybe have a healthier eating plan (im a vegetarian) but not gain weight, (which i probably would now if i increased my calorie intake)

-Please give me tips on workouts for my problem areas, any tips.

-PLEASE NO UNPRODUCTIVE COMMENTS, ONLY ANSWER IF YOU CAN HELP.

    thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
Controlling your calorie intake is important in weight loss/control , in that you have done well kudos to that.:)

however, are you taking your veggie and protein like fish, chicken regularly? did you know with them you can speed up weight loss while maintaing a good health?:) of course ,refrain from fats as usual, especialyly trans fats which are extremely difficult to lose.

As for work out let me summarize first:

Do cardio training 3 times a week ( running, swimming, tennis) for 30mins to 1 hr each time.

Do strength training for 2-3 times a week (it is reccomended you do them after your cardio) which means you have to cut your cardio to let's say 30 mins max no less than 20 minutes.

Why? - because after 15 minutes of cardio training you will start burning fats and toning up your muscles thereafter will help in weightloss as you are able to continue exercising over a long period , what we call 'endurance training'. Muscles will helps you to burn fats as well during the day:)

I don't wanna bombard you with too much information here, u can e mail me:)

      cheers

  10. QUESTION:
    diet for maximum weight/fat loss?
im starting the plan. im sick of this body and i want to change! i need to lose 42 pounds to get to my goal weight. but ofcourse i want to lose maximum fat too! i want a completely lean, toned sculpted body, not just a little weight loss.
i need some help with what to do..especially diet-wise. im vegetarian so what should i be eating? please help! i want to do this right!

    • ANSWER:
If you want to lose weight, you need to two things: eat less and exercise more. Weight gain happens when you create a calorie surplus (eat more than you burn). Your body takes the excess calories and converts them to fat which get stored around your stomach, arms and thighs. The longer you remain in a calorie surplus, the more weight you'll gain. To lose that weight, you need to do the opposite. You need to create a calorie deficit (start eating less than you burn).

Your first step is to figure out how many calories you burn on a daily basis. This calculator will help you out http://calorieneedscalculator.com The number you get from this tool is what your body burns on a daily basis. To lose weight, simply eat less. It sounds a lot easier than it is but making small changes helps you adjust to a new lifestyle. Don't think of this as a diet, think of it as a new life. Instead of eating foods high in sugars, white flour and saturated fat, go with fruits, vegetables, whole wheats, fish, lean meats, nuts and beans. In addition to eating less, you also need to exercise more. Start off at 1-2 times per week and work your way up to 3-5 times per week.

Don't make all of these changes at once or you won't be able to properly adjust to them. Generally, eating healthier foods will decrease your calorie intake. Compare a doughnut to an apple and you'll see that healthy foods are lower in calories. You can find some more information at the Beginner's Guide to Dieting - http://straightdiet.com

  11. QUESTION:
why do vegetarians/vegans say that it is not a weight loss plan, but imply that all meat eaters are fat?
I've just noticed a trend that more and more vegetarians are saying if you eat meat you're fat basically, and that isn't always the case. I am not nor have I ever been overweight and have always ate meat. Also body builders for example eat very high protein diets which usually include a lot of meat, and they certainly are not fat

    • ANSWER:
I definitely don't think that all meat eaters are overweight. Obviously some are but so are some vegetarians and vegans! Maybe it's similar to how a lot of meat eaters say that vegans are pale and malnourished.

  12. QUESTION:
Which of these vegetarian diets is best for weight loss?
I have recently gone vegetarian and I need to lose weight. I have 2 vegetarian diet plans that I am trying to choose from. One is Dr.Dean Ornish "eat more weigh less" which is basically a low fat vegetarian plan restricting fat to almost none. The other is "the soy zone" by Barry Sears where fat is not restricted but bread and grains are (low carb). I tend to think the lower carb one would produce better results........anyone have experience with either? Please give me any insight you have!!!!!!!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
diets don't usually work, because once you go off the diet, you gain all the weight you had before.
it's easier just to eat how you should and exercise regularly.
carbs are good for you and essential for energy.

      be healthy.

  13. QUESTION:
Raw Food Diet && Weight Loss ?
Starting a raw food diet, to lose a few pounds, also just for health reasons. I'm already a vegetarian so no meat.

    Just getting opinions.

    SAMPLE MEAL PLAN
    Breakfast
Fresh fruit salad topped with chopped fresh almonds, wheat germ, and pumpkin seeds; organic sheep’s milk yogurt or coconut cream.
    Lunch
Mixed salad of various leaves, tomatoes, mandarins, corn, yellow capsicums, onions and parsley with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. Topped with sprouted lentils.
    Dinner
Raw mixed vegetable soup (blended); home-made sunflower seed cheese; 1/2 avocado; raspberry and banana sorbet.

    • ANSWER:
I make a lot of dishes that are raw, such as beet ravioli, but it takes awhile to make and a few appliances are needed. Do you have a mandoline and a food processor?

The lunch salad sounds so good right now.

I personally cant really help you with a meal plan, I just eat apples, bananas, salads, and the occassional planned meal like the beet ravioli.

Email me through my profile if you want actual recipes from some of the books I have.

  14. QUESTION:
    Vegetarian weight loss?
Hi, i am 13 years old and a vegetarian of about 3 years. I have been trying to lose weight for some time now, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know any workout and diet plans for a vegetarian? thank much! :) <3

    • ANSWER:
Any workout can work with a vegetarian or vegan diet, you just have to know what to eat and the results you want. You just have to get some basic knowledge of what food supplies what.

Also, just cutting out meat won't cause you to lose weight. You're still going to a) watch what you eat and b) exercise. I would definitely keep a journal of what I eat, the amount of calories it contains and set a daily limit. You'd be surprised how many preservatives and empty carbs make their way into alleged healthful food.

  17. QUESTION:
    Vegetarian Weight Loss?
Im a vegetarian and I really want to lose some weight. Im about 40 pounds over weight. I would love to lose those 40 pounds and get healthier again. It's really hard for me to diet since I don't eat meat.

    I eat fish.

I dont eat eggs or milk. I will use them to cook though.

Any ideas on a good weight loss plan.

*note* I was reading about a diet that really does work but I cant really do it because it's all no carbs and stuff. It says not to eat any fruit or any vegetables grown underground. Except you can use garlic for cooking. So please try and work that into your answers!

    Thanks in advance.
my weight gain was caused by a few things. I hit puberty when I was 10 and I have an anxiety disorder. When I was younger I wouldn't eat all day then Id come home and eat which made all the weight pack on. I don't eat that unhealthy but sometimes I do eat sweets.

    • ANSWER:
Eat well but only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. To have more satisfaction out of ur food, Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will also activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals. Do not go on fast or starvation diet.

Nothing other than water in between.

No special diet, call it by any name or program helps as one cannot adopt them on permanent basis. Diet pills are chemicals and per se bad and shud be avoided unless the doc considers it necessary looking at ur condition.

Take light exercises and brisk walks for 30 min.regularly preferably on empty stomach and twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time and hassle free.

Be patient and not in a hurry.

U cannot choose spots for reduction.

This schedule can be adopted on permanent basis to lead a healthy life and maintain weight.

  18. QUESTION:
Which of these diets will be better for weight loss?
I have recently gone vegetarian and I need to lose weight. I have 2 vegetarian diet plans that I am trying to choose from. One is Dr.Dean Ornish "eat more weigh less" which is basically a low fat vegetarian plan restricting fat to almost none. The other is "the soy zone" by Barry Sears where fat is not restricted but bread and grains are (low carb). I tend to think the lower carb one would produce better results........anyone have experience with either? Please give me any insight you have!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. QUESTION:
How to loose weight- vegetarian style?
    5'7", 152 lbs- size 10. 16 yr old girl.
I really want to get down to a size 4, so I'm not that focused on the pounds, more the clothing.
I've been a lacto ovo vegetarian (meaning I eat eggs and dairy) for over 2 years so this is not some spur of the moment weight loss attempt- this is me asking how being vegetarian affects the way I should diet in an attempt to loose weight.
    Eating plans? Exercise advice?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! I'm also a lacto-ovo vegetarian, absolutely LOVE not having to eat meat anymore =) Anyway...I personally found the Weight Watchers point system very easy to follow and I've lost nearly 60 pounds since this past January! I eat lots of vegetables (fresh & frozen), lots of whole grains, egg whites, beans, chickpeas, fruit, nuts, and low fat dairy. Basically WW just teaches you to watch portions and make healthy choices....but with a little research and effort you can do that on your own. Exercise is also very important! I go for a 45-60 minute walk/run about 6 days a week now. And then I also lift weights and do Pilates for about 45 minutes 4 times a week. That's helped me a LOT. Try and vary what you eat....look around the grocery store for new and interesting things to try. High protein + high fiber is always good. But make sure you're getting enough healthy fats too - like olive oil, nuts, nut butters, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds. If you're looking for a very high quality protein that's also low fat, you might want to check out whey protein powder. You can mix it with just about anything, it's yummy, and a protein shake with some fruit makes a nice quick breakfast or snack. I like to add it to my oatmeal in the morning along with some flax seeds and cinnamon mixed in. It makes it sweet so you don't need sugar or anything. Make sure you always eat a good breakfast....that will give energy for the entire day and help you not to overeat later. Best Wishes with your weight loss!

  21. QUESTION:
    Vegetarian Healthy Weight Loss ideas??
I need to lose a lot of weight (over 100 lbs). I am cutting meat almost completely, but want more ideas on how to be healthy. Any suggestions, ideas or food plans? If you have lost weight on a healthy veg diet, can you please list what a day's food looked like? (What you had for bfast, lunch, dinner, if you had snacks...)
Vegetarian for other reasons, so don't include meat in suggestions please. Cheese is vegetarian, but not vegan. I'm not ready to commit to vegan. Ovo-lacto help is great.

    • ANSWER:
      (FYI...CHEESE is not vegetarian).

Try a supplement called L-carnitine. Get it as a solo product. This amino acid will help convert your fat into muscle while you cut down on proteins with a vegan diet.

I lost weight on the following...

Breakfast: Banana and apple or a banana and some citrus. Drink a glass of soy milk.

Lunch: Go nuts on the salad bar. Light on the dressing, no pickles. Plenty of lima beans.

Dinner: A roll and a tasty veggy soup like brocolli or tomato. Maybe steam some veggies in olive oil. You can even stir fry.

Key is to get more cardio activity. You don't have to run, but take the dog for a walk.

My dear old dad said you only need one excercise to lose weight, and that's to put your fork down and stand up. I lost 30 lbs in three months and I feel great. Now I CRAVE the healthy stuff. You can cut out meat but supplement with proteins like in beans and peanut butter. Leafy greens such as kale and mustard (esp. collard greens) have lots of protein.

Good luck, and don't stress about it too much. Eat what you want to as long as it's not fried. And for heaven's sakes, No POP. I lost 5 lbs in 3 days when I quit drinking soda.

  22. QUESTION:
    Weight loss but dieting difficulty?
Well right now i'm living in a dorm and in college, but trying to lose some weight...I excersize and thats not going to bad, i usually try to get in at least 1-2 hours a day mon-friday...but diet-wise...again I live in a dorm with just a mini fridge so I cant exactly go grocery shopping, i have an unlimited food plan for the buffet but....Im a vegetarian. So my choices are VERY limited, there are some healthy choices (usually just salad and veggie burgers) but thats about it, and I can only eat those same things so many times before i hate my life, leaving me to eat more pizza, macaroni + cheese, etc....What can I do about my diet? also, anyone know any good fitness sites?

  23. QUESTION:
Help choosing meal plan for fast weight loss?
I have recently purchased the Slim in 6 workout program. I need to to lose weight fast, and yes I know that losing weight extremely fast isn't healthy, but I'm looking to lose the most weight I can in a healthy manner. What diet plan should I follow to go with this program? I am horrible at planning meals, I'm a vegetarian and seeking meals and food options that are inexpensive.

    • ANSWER:
You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep your fat percentage high. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

If you starve yourself, your body will freak out and will want to store every ounce in case it doesn't get nourished again. You need to give it adequate nourishment so it doesn't slow your metabolism down to compensate for lowered calories.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) triggers insulin which can store the calories you eat into fat. The more protein you eat the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate you eat the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass will have you in awesome shape in no time. Good luck!

  25. QUESTION:
What do u think about vegetarians?
Not the vegetarians that are vegetarians because weight loss or a diet plan, but the ones that do it for the animals and the ones that follow quotes like these:
"to my mind the life of a lamb is no more precious then that of a human being.I would be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body"-Mahatma Gandhi

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution.Until we stop harming all other living beings we are still savages"-Thomas Alva Edison
Sources:Ive always wanted to know peoples opinions because I myself am a vegetarian

I got the quotes from a you tube video http://youtube.com/watch?v=2UIhtKIxGZI

    • ANSWER:
Certainly alot of great & far thinking people were and are vegetarians including Ghandi.

The time will come when it will probably be necessary in our human and planetary evolution to give up meat just as we will have to give up fossile fuels. We are literally destroying and starving our planet and fellow humans. About 1/2 of the fresh water on the planet is used for livestock, 70 percent of the grain grown in the US is fed to livestock and 70 percent of Africa's grain is shipped to Europe to feed their live stock. About 30 percent of the surface of the planet is used for grazing and we are quickly burning down precious forrests to make room for more. 69 percent of the inland water in the US is polluted due to massive runoffs of factory farm waste. Livestock accounts for about 18 percent of global warming (more than car exhausts). So, going veg is about the most efficient way of lessoning your carbon foot print on the planet.

Even the American Cattle Association has officially condoned the nutrional efficiency of a well planned vegetarian diet. That said, the best and most thorough study concerning the effects of animal products versus health is "The China Study". This is a recently publish long term ( 20 years) study which positively links the consumption of animal products to many modern illnesses including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

In Eastern teachings, it is cautioned that the anger and fear of an animal about to be slaughtered is absorbed into the system, creating more anger and fear. That is why a meatless and cruelty free diet is practiced by serious spiritual aspirants (ahimsa or harmlessness) as in the case of Ghandi and others, including many Christians. From the physiological point of view, when an animal (including a human) goes into a state of fear, it releases uric acid into it's system which essentially poisens it. Carnivorous animals have much longer intestines for which to process these poisens out. However, they also can have healthy vegetarian diets which promote longevity and health as my 3 dogs and 1 cat do (cats do require taurine, which has been synthesized since the 1930's and is added to all commercial brands anyway).

Not only will the world be at peace when Christ rules on earth Isaiah 2:1-5, but wild animals and deadly poisonous snakes will be transformed harmless. Isaiah 11:6-9

"Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission to be of service to them whenever they require it."
      St. Francies of Assisi

As long as humans massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap the joy of love. Pythagoras

  26. QUESTION:
Need advice for a jumpstart for weight loss....?
I just went to the dr and was weighed. I am the heaviest i've ever been! and feel like crap. I want to lose weight so i will feel better physically and look a little better too.My dr said I am healthy and look fine, but I am very unhappy with myselt (i am 5'1, 150 lbs). I want to know if this is a good starting plan to jumpstart my weight loss (esp for my super busy schedule). Keep in mind after this initial part I want to eat a predominantly vegetarian diet. Would this be a good way to start losing weight:
each day drink:1 or 2 of the Fuze Slenderize fruit juices,
    a
    1 to 2 V8 low sodium
lots of water (with lemon juice)
and some fresh fruit like oranges or frozen grapes and
    quaker rice cakes for snacks.

let me know, any suggestions would be great. I only want to do this for a short time to lose a few initial pounds and cleanse my body some..

    • ANSWER:
Your doctor says you are fine. Everyone should get in shape with exercise. Find a method exercise that you enjoy and do it every day. Build muscle. Eat what you want when you are actually hungry and stop before you are stuffed full. Try to eat a balanced diet, but don't limit yourself with a bunch or rules and diets. Diets don't work and are unhealthy in the long run. Only do things that are healthy and that you can do forever, for the rest of your life, like cutting fast food forever. 95 percent of dieters gain it all back in one year and 99 percent do in two years. Dieting is associated with weight gain over a long period of time.

If women like you learned to love their bodies, a billion dollar industry that cashes in on insecurities and making people feel like they are not good enough would collapse. Quite frankly, being a little fat isn't as unhealthy as being thin. Anybody who thinks diets or restricting food types is a good idea is uneducated about the human body. Short cuts do not work. Most of the weight you lose is water weight. For health, eat a balanced diet and exercise for the health and endorphins and forget about an ideal shape. The average age a girl starts dieting is 8. 1/3 women are on a diet at any given time. 4/5 US women are unsatisfied with their appearance. You are beautiful and your body has a set point weight that it wants to be. If you starve yourself, the body will fight back by lowering the metabolism to maintain it's ideal weight. Limit your tv viewing. 1/4 TV commercials send out a message about attractiveness in this brainwashed society that has been seeing images of beautiful skinny women and mocking chubby people. It's worse for women: look at the number of average or uglier guys on tv and in movies versus the number of women. 30 percent of women in a study rated their ideal shape and it turned out to be 20 percent underweight. Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz meet the clinical requirements for anorexia, and so do 25% of playboy centerfolds. If the flippin mannequins became real women, they wouln't be able to menstruate. Women finally get some rights, but we limit ourselves like this and our bodies are reduced to objects we inspect and criticise. Men decide to only value women for their looks and a thin, attractive wife symbolizes social status for them. Girls call each other fat as the greatest insult they can muster. When did fat become worse than cruel, stupid, dishonest, lazy or cowardly. When did "chubby" start to mean the last four of those things?
We are killing our daughters and wasting our lives trying to meet an ideal that blows. I wish women would get together and fight it instead of letting others control us like this. Unless you are considered obese, or have a BMI of over 25, don't worry about it. Love your body and your confidence will light up the room and give other women permission to love themselves too.

  28. QUESTION:
The most effective diet for losing weight?
I know it seems pretty simple: healthy diet + exercise = weight loss but i really can't get motivated. I'm not lifethreateningly obese i just could lose weight in places and aren't the sort of person that can eat anything with zero visible affects. I finish college this Friday so will have around 4 months worth of summer holiday and i'm looking to lose weight. I do go to the gym but i'm not very consistant and i know i don't push myself enough. I'm a vegetarian too. I don't want to do anything radical and unhealthy i just would like a strict diet plan that won't need too much effort (i can't cook at all).
At the minute i pretty much eat potatoes, lots of pasta, some Quorn foods and salads and chocolate in between meals (know any chocolatey snacks that aren't packed with fat and sugar? I can't go without my daily chocolate fix) - not good.
Any ideas for motivation too? Some days i'm really wanting to go to the gym and quit the rubbish food and then others i just think 'why bother'.

    • ANSWER:
Shih Tzu Lover, actually, all the weight loss program works. It depends on whether you follow all the instructions.

If you are planning to lose weight through dieting, then I would recommend you to seek dieting as a long term commitment instead of taking such extreme diet that will not provide any long term effect.

There are many diets that ensure long term weight loss effect. And the foods are not bad, and the nutritions are very balanced.

Personally, I have tried a diet called Calorie Shifting, that aims to improve my metabolic rate. I have followed a free 7 days diet plan and managed to lose 3lbs during the plan. I find that sticking to a more normal and acceptable diet will yield better effect in the future instead of just few lbs within few days.

Along with this answer, is the link to the free 7 days diet plan. Hope that this helps.

  29. QUESTION:
Do you think this weight loss plan will work?
I've tried nearly every weight loss plan in the book. Right now I weigh approximately 244 pounds and am looking to lose 90 pounds. (My last doctor, who is now retired, said that at my age [22] and height [5'4"] I should be between 126-160)Recently my husband and I sold our car so that we could buy bikes to both get in shape and save more money since we won't have to pay for gas. So far my plan is as follows: I ride 4.6 miles to my friend's house, workout for an hour, ride 4.6 miles back home. I'm only worried that this will take a long, long time. What I'm wondering from anyone who has any knowledge of dieting properly is:
#1: How long, with a proper diet coupled with this exercise routine, do you think it will take to lose the 90 pounds I want to lose?
#2: What kind of diet should I try? I'm not into vegetarian diets (I've tried...) and I don't like seafood all that much. I just want to know what you would recommend.
#3: Is there any other kind of exercise that you would recommend me to try? Right now the workout routine that my friend and I do is just simple basic things like push ups, squats, crunches, and things like that.
I appreciate any advice on this as I am really striving to lose the weight this time.

    • ANSWER:

  30. QUESTION:
I've been a vegetarian for a week now. Any tips/ weight loss help?
Ok, well I have been a vegetarian for a week today, and I really like it. I was wondering if anyone had tips on getting protein and things I would get from meat? Also, I REALLY want to lose as much weight as possible before I start at my new high school in September. So I thought this vegetarian diet would help (But, this is not the reason I want to be a vegetarian.) Currently, I'm 160 (I'm 14) and I'm VERY unhappy with the way I look. I had the plan that, since Ramadan is coming up (on tuesday) that I would exercise all day, and when it came time to eat, I would drink LOTS of water and then if I still had room, I would eat a little. What do you think? Thanks for your help. (And please no comments on 'don't starve yourself, because I will be fasting anyway.)

    • ANSWER:
Being vegetarian will not help you lose weight. You lose weight by using more calories than you consume. You can easily google how much a certain activity burns calories per hour or minute, and then do simple math to find out how much you will have to exercise in order to lose x amount of pounds in x amount of time, without changing eating habits. if your really desperate, i learned a trick from several friends who would cut weight from wrestling. Halve the amount of food you consume, double the amount of exercise you do. Although some foods are unhealthier than others, they alone do not make you fat. In theory, you could eat nothing but chocolate all day, and as long as you burn more calories you will have gained no weight. And be careful about water consumption, your body will retain quite a bit of water, adding more 'weight' but not fat.

  31. QUESTION:
    Weight Loss Plan, Please Help?
I am 17 years old, female. Prom is coming up in mid-May and I put on about 10 pounds over the summer that I want to take off plus a little bit more.

    • ANSWER:
For the acne, make sure you aren't wearing makeup when you go to work out.

I did the following stuff and lost about 10 lbs in less than a month. I did my cardio first thing in the morning and my workout in the afternoon.

Here's a few things you can do to get in shape:

      1. Eat six small, healthy meals per day. Breakfast should be eaten within two hours of waking up. Stop drinking soda.

      2. When you eat, keep serving sizes in mind. A snack with only 100 calories isn't too healthy when you eat three servings at a time.

      3. Keep up the cardio. Remember to switch up intensity and duration. I suggest running, that's my favorite. Don't run every day, though. Alternate with swimming or biking, etc.

      4. Incorporate a good core routine (planks, sit ups, leg raises, and some lower back exercises), pushups, pull ups, squats.

      5. I get a lot of stuff from runnersworld.com, they have running plans and workout videos.

Do all that and you'll look good.

  33. QUESTION:
    Diet plan?
I need a diet plan for a teenage gymnast I coach. She wants to lose about 10 pounds, but I need her energy level to stay up (or preferably increase) during workouts. She shouldn't lose any muscle either. Plus, she's a vegetarian. So, does anyone have high-energy, vegetarian weight loss plans?

    Fast diet for a vegetarian?
I have recently put on 35lbs and am really unhappy with myself. i workout everyday mixing cardio and weights but im still not losing weight, does anyone know of a diet/meal plan that is vegetarian and works fast for weight loss? i need a full meal plan of what to eat and whento eat it. i have the list of all the vegetarian diet options but i am obviously doing something wrong since i keep gaining and i have been working at this for 2months now!

    • ANSWER:
It's possible you're not getting the maximum benefit from the exercise you're doing. Are you measuring the level of your heart rate when you work out? You need to be reaching 80% of your max heart rate (220 minus your age) for a sustained period for your exercise to help you burn calories.

As for a meal plan, clearly, if you're taking in too many calories, it almost doesn't matter how much exercise you do because you won't be creating a calorie deficit.

Here's some info I hope will help:

Losing weight is a function of calories in and calories out. There's very little mystery to it. It used to be thought that a pound of body weight (or 2.2kg) was equal to 3500 calories but recent research suggests that's not a hard and fast rule. Consider it a rule of thumb. Do a web search and you'll be able to determine your approximate basal metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn each day just by being alive and breathing). I'd guess that your BMR is probably in the 1500 calorie range. So, if you consume less than 1500 calories per day, over time, you're likely to lose weight. However, if you were to starve yourself (equivalent to consuming anything less than about 600 calories/day), your metabolism is likely to slow down and the differential between calories consumed and calories burned is likely to narrow significantly.

You can increase the number of calories you burn with vigorous exercise. Brisk walking, jogging, running, aerobic exercise, bike riding, time on an elliptical trainer, etc. is likely to burn about 10 calories per minute. Using the 3500 calorie benchmark, to burn enough calories to lose 1 pound (2.2kg), you'd need to do about 350 minutes of exercise (or about 6 hours). So about an hour a day of vigorous exercise will help you increase your calories expended to lose about a pound a week (assuming you consume fewer or the same number of calories as your BMR).

Several things will help to increase your metabolism along with the vigorous exercise - eating many small meals over the course of a day (6 or so) keeps your digestive track engaged so it's working harder to work through the food you're consuming. The more times you eat, the more calories get burned trying to digest the food. Be sure to eat soon after getting up each day so your metabolism gets going.

Adding weight training to your exercise regimen to help build lean muscle tissue will help to increase your metabolism. Muscle maintenance burns more calories per day than the body uses to maintain the other tissues in your body. Drinking about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day will help your body flush the "ashes" of what it's burning through your increased exercise.

Stick to lean proteins (egg whites, turkey or chicken breast, fish, etc.), whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and avoid most fats. Your body needs some fat in order to metabolize and digest the rest of the food you're eating. You can get that amount of fat from the chicken or turkey breast and/or fish. Limited amounts of olive oils, very limited amounts of almonds also can provide the little bit of fat that your body needs. Limit alcoholic beverages and other sugars as they have little to no nutritional value and will increase your calorie count significantly.

Attempt to limit calorie intake to about 1200 per day while doing your at least 1 hour of vigorous exercise. Assuming you don't overconsume on relatively higher calorie foods, you can have virtually unlimited fruits and vegetables - they're so low in calories and high in bulk, it's likely you won't be hungry. Try to avoid processed foods.

      Good luck!

  35. QUESTION:
I need weight loss tips for a 15 year old, please?
Alright, so I'm 5 foot 7 1/2 inches tall, I'm 15 years old, and I weight 115. Frankly, I'm not that angry about my weight, I'm okay with how much I weigh (however, yes, it going down would be nice). What I want to do is lose fat! Specifically hip, arm, and belly fat. I'm not super fat, but I definitely don't feel comfortable in a swimsuit or even in semi-tight clothing! I feel like you can see my fat hips through them. Whenever I turn around to look in the mirror at home, I feel disgusted by them.

Does anyone have any good weight loss tips and maybe even a 7-day diet thing? Or just a regular everyday diet would be good, too! Frankly, the quicker, the better. I want to feel good about myself by the time school starts. I tried not eating, but it's really hard because I crave food! Also, I am a vegetarian, so no meal plans with meat, please!

I know a lot of you will be like, "you're 15 you shouldn't worry about your weight. Go back to playing with your dolls." or maybe "just eat healthier and exercise more". First, I don't care what you say, no offense, but I'd rather feel good about myself than become self-conscious and develop more serious problems such as an eating disorder or self-harming. See, I want to be healthier about it! Secondly, that's not helpful at all. HOW do I exercise more? WHAT exercises? WHAT should I eat? Give me more, please!

    Thanks in advance.
Throwing this out there - I don't care about losing weight. (: I know that I'm not heavy, but I have FAT! That's the thing I'd like to lose. I want to shed numbers on a tape measurer, not on the scale.

    • ANSWER:
I`m going to start by saying you don`t sound fat at all! But, I know where you`re coming from. I lost a lot of weight when I was about 4 years younger than you (I was 11 years old, and before I lost weight I was about 5 foot 2, and weighed 125 pounds.)

So, first off, eat lots of different vegetables, in many different colors. Try to cut back on breads/pasta, and instead eat rice. Make sure you get protein, as I'm sure you must've heard a million times before. But, peanut butter isn't a good source to rely on, because it has a lot of calories, salt, and sugar! Almond butter is much better for you, as well as tofu, quinoa, tempeh, and just plain nuts (beware of the nuts though, as they are an excellent source of protein, but with a lot of calories.) Also, don't forget your calcium! Whether that's through milk, soy milk, broccoli, rice milk, figs, and leafy green vegetables.

Exercise! You should find a few good aerobic exercises that you enjoy doing, whether that's swimming, biking, runningjogging, 'active video games' like wii fit or dancedance revolution, rock climbing, jumping jacks, dancing, gardening, cleaning, playing sports, yoga, skipping, walking, gymnastics, hiking, and so on. There are so many different kinds of aerobic activity that it's actually really hard to find an excuse not to do it.

You should also be keeping your muscles in shape. You'll be stronger and feel healthier, as well as have a more toned appearance! Whether you lift weights, or just do simple push-ups, squats and crunches. Just try not to work the same muscles over and over again. Also, after you work your muscles, give them a day to repair before you work them again. You can still do your aerobic activity, but if you work your muscles, it should be a different muscle group. If you don't know of many different muscle-building exercises, try Google. There are hundreds out there, and you'll be able to find clear instructions on how to do them on the internet. You could also check out your local library for workout tapes.

Don't forget, if you go through a slump or even just miss a few days of activity, don't just give up! Continue on, for your appearance, for your health, or even just so you can say "I did it!"

      Good luck :)

  36. QUESTION:
    Weight-loss help for a vegetarian?
I'm 21 years old, 5'3", and 167lbs. I've been a vegetarian for nearly 4 years now, and I've been fat my whole life. I've had several ups and downs in weight the past few years due to disordered eating (once from 180 to 140), but this time I want to do it right.

I'd like to lose at least 30lbs, but my willpower at times like these suck to no end. I need help with some sort of diet/exercise plan that isn't too harsh...if I'm not full I'll just start snacking. And any good exercise tips for home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Susan: Thank you, and I did post a similar question in the Veggie section only a little after I posted this one. I am trying to go vegan, but the cheese is killing me!

    • ANSWER:
Your focus should be on protein and fiber to give you energy and keep you feeling full. So, add lots of nuts and legumes to your fruit and veggie routine. Almonds are a great because they are less fatty than some other nuts.
As for home exercise, I bought a DVD set called Yoga Booty Ballet for about . It comes with several different workouts. Because it is a balance of yoga, toning, ballet, and stretching, it keeps me interested. I feel so good after I do it that I am actually motivated to do it again the next day, which is saying something! I've had problems with motivation and willpower in the past!
      Good luck!

  37. QUESTION:
Do you think my weight loss plan will work?
I wanna lose about 25 lbs. I'm 140 lbs and 5'2" and my goal is to be at 110 - 117 by the holidays (so I can gain it all back hahahaha XD)

I've done the diet before. It's called "the rotation diet". You eat 600 calories for 3 days, 900 for 4 days, 1200 for a week, take a week off restrictions, and the repeat as many times as you want until you lose weight. I did it sometime last year, and lost about 6 lbs in 2 weeks, tops. And the weight stayed off. I ate small meals, but of healthy foods. And those amounts of calories and did maybe a half hour of DDR with it. I lose weight, and when I got off the diet, the weight stayed off. It worked fast, too. It was thought up by a doctor so.....I only plan on doing it twice (600, 900, 1200, week off, and then repeat once) and doing 45 minutes of activity, including strength training, which I didn't do last time. And then after I lose some weight from that, I'll pick up my caloric intake to around 1500 daily.

    Is this ok?

http://www.chasefreedom.com/rotationdiet.html There is a link to the actual diet plan

I know it's unhealthy, but I don't wanna hear about that please. I just wanna know if I'd lose. As I said, I've done it before.........

    here is my normal workout:

After school/before dinner I have two options that I do:

    1. This may sound silly, but my sibling and I like to pretend we're performing on stage like a band or something, and we just sing along to songs, but I do alot of running, jumping and dancing. It;s usually about an hour to an hour and 20 mins we do that, and I don't jump and stuff the whole time, I gotta catch my breath a little and all.......so it's probably around 30 - 45 minutes of that.....(it's fun so I'm more likely to do it and not get too bored or anything)

    2. 45 minutes of cardio..........i usually do some on my bike and treadmill, mixing it up daily.......i may also start doing intense DDR on some days too. since I can't increase how long I do it, after two weeks of my normal speed on my, let's say my bike for an example, (30 - 36m) i'll increase my speed a little bit.

I'll do that Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun

And then on Tues, Thurs and Sat:

I'll do my "concert" routine after school, and after dinner I'll do 30 minutes of strength training with things like:

Squats (i'll be doing different types, increasing reps every week)
Walking lunges (50 on each leg, increasing by 15 each week)
Pilates (I'll be doing different pilate routines for abs)
Push-ups (various types, also increasing reps)
    Planks (various moves)

    Etc etc

And also in the evenings, after dinner, almost every day, my sibling and I RP (roleplay) in our bedroom, and there's alot of walking and running (mostly walking) and eventually we're gonna be fighting enemies and stuff so I'll be kicking and punching and jumping and running alot.
    OH and i'm a vegetarian

***My sister is telling me that the "concert" won't burn fat OR barely any calories at all
I do alot of jumping and running around and stuff when I do it. Doesn't that count for something? Will the concert do anything worth my time??***

    • ANSWER:
Keeping a food journal helps you pin point your eating pattern and will enable you to easily modify it. If possible, have your Registered Dietitian review your journal.
Most authorities recommend 30 - 60 minutes of physical activity a day to stay healthy. Also try adding weight-bearing exercises at least 2 times a week. This will help burn some of the unwanted calories.

  38. QUESTION:
How is my weight loss plan?
    I'm 14 years old, 5'3 and 141 lbs.

Diet: I usually eat four meals a day (breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner) that add up to around 1300-1500 calories. (I'm a vegetarian so I eat a lot of soup, stir fried vegetables, and tofu. I try not to eat a lot of carbs, but pasta is my weakness.) Also, I drink about 8-10 cups of water a day (I don't know if this makes a difference, but I used to drink way less water).

Exercise: At least five days a week, I do 40 minutes cardio on my elliptical machine, 100 jumping jacks, 100 crunches, 25 reverse crunches, 50 bicycles, 25 lunges, 25 squats, and I do some light weight lifting. I stretch a lot throughout the day too.

I've been doing this for two weeks but I've only lost 1 lb. I want to lose 6 more pounds which will put me in the healthy weight range.

    Any comments/suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Go for a 30-45 minute walk every day!! It helps! Also, make sure you eat healthy foods. To lose weight you need to burn more calories than how many you consumed in that day....so you MIGHT be consuming too many calories. Also, cut down on the pasta if that will help! I think you're plan is good! I've lost 7 pounds in one month...GOOD LUCK! Hope you get to your goal :)

  39. QUESTION:
Weight Loss For A 16 Year Old Girl?
Ok, I wanna use the rest of this year to really lose weight and get in shape. I'm gonna be eating fruits, vegetables, whole wheats, low fat dairies and lean protein sources (I'm a vegetarian for my own reasons, not weight loss reasons. I don't eat fish or eggs, nor do I eat beans, chick peas or lentils cause I don't like them :P ) so I eat tofu and Morning star vegetarian food and nuts and 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on my fruit, and I drink at least 3 liters of water and green tea. I'm totally cutting out soda and sugar and I'm going to watch my calories and make sure I eat no less than 1200 a day

    For exercise, here's my plan:

    1. This may sound silly, but my sibling and I like to pretend we're performing on stage like a band or something, and we just sing along to songs, but I do alot of running, jumping and dancing. It;s usually about an hour to an hour and 20 mins we do that, and I don't jump and stuff the whole time, I gotta catch my breath a little and all.......so it's probably around 30 - 45 minutes of that.....(it's fun so I'm more likely to do it and not get too bored or anything) ----- I do that about 5 times a week

And I'll be doing 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week, too. I plan on doing 10 minutes on my treadmill for two weeks, and then work up to 15, and then after two more weeks I'll do 20, and so on and so forth until I can do 30 minutes straight on the treadmill. My other 25 minutes of cardio will be on my exercise bike or stair walking. I'd sprint up the stairs and walk back down, sprint up, walk down...... and then I'll do one day of strength with things like planks, pilates, crunches, lunges, squats, etc etc.

I'll do different types and add some more reps after a while.

I wanna lose 30 pounds and gain some muscle tone and get in pretty good shape by the end of this year. This is a lifestyle change, not just a diet plan either.

I also will be giving myself a light cheat meal once a week. Probably a skinny cow ice cream or something like that.

    I'm 5'2" and 140 pounds. I wanna be 110 - 117 by the New Year.

    Sound good/possible?

    Enough exercise for weight loss?

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations, this is the most sensible weight loss plan I've heard in a long time. When reading labels, try to avoid high fructose corn syrup. keep your loss to 2 lbs a week. And good luck.

    I'm 5'2" and 140 pounds. I wanna be 110 - 117 by the New Year.

    Sound good/possible?

    Enough exercise for weight loss?

    • ANSWER:
That sounds good and very realistic. Nice idea about giving yourself a cheat meal. If you give things like treats ups all together your going to crave them more often and in larger quantities.

By cutting out sugar and soft drinks you'll lose a lot of empty calories. Green tea is proven to increase the speed of your metabolism and by drinking your water your not only regulating the digestion of your food but also loosing calories because it takes energy to metabolize the liquid.

The main thing to remember here is that in order to loose weight you need to have a higher level of calories out than you put in. I used a calorie expenditure calculator to find out how many calories you need in a day. With a weight of 140, a height of 5'2 and your age being 16 you need 1650 calories just for your organs to function properly. By adding exercise you need to add even more calories. If you do 30 minutes of cardio your going to loose anywhere from 200-400 calories depending on the effort.

The planks and other core strengthening exerices will help you be toned and increase the amount of muscle you have on your body. The more muscle you have the harder your metabolism works, thus making it more efficient and faster.

Overall good plan, a couple pointers though, don't restrict your calorie intake too fast. If your used to consuming 3000 calories in a day don't jump down to 1000, slowly decrease by maybe 200-300 calories. 3500 calories is equal to a pound. So by even just not drinking an extra glass of milk a day, you'll lose around 10 pounds in a month. Also, enjoy your food. If your hating what your eating you'll get moody and quit your new plan.

Good luck! Hope it works out for you :)

  42. QUESTION:
10-day water fast + Jillian Michaels "Master Your Metabolism" Diet..will I lose weight?
I'm 17yrs old. F. 5'5". about 150lbs. Previously suffered from an eating disorder several months ago and have gained all the weight back during recovery and now am committing to becoming strong and healthy. I'm going to start with a 10day water/tea ONLY fast and I was wondering how much weight I would lose? and should i exercise during a fast? Then, after the 10days is up, I'm going to be following Jillian Michael's "Master Your Metabolism" meal plans to eat the right foods for my body and get my hormones back on track and working properly, which, in turn, promotes healthy and "fast" weight loss because the body isn't under any stressful conditions and being starved. So, just wondering, how much weight can I lose on a 10day water fast, and basically only eat fruit, veggies, little dairy, and whole grains (I'm vegetarian=no meat)??? After the fast I will start to exercise at LEAST 30min a day.
    I NEED HELP/ADVICE!!!
    Thanx!!!

    • ANSWER:
Dear Rhi. The other posters may have some good points, but I'm not sure that they are informed medical doctors. I have done a lot of research on the topic, and a few water fasts, and yes, I am a doctor. You should read Dr. Mark Fuhrman's "Fasting and Eating for Health" and then, "Eat to Live". You can find them cheap on amazon, or half.com. He is vegetarian, so it suits your long-term goals even more. Fasts of 5 to 30+ days duration are different than starvation, because your body goes into ketosis after about 48 hours after food is withheld where it derives energy from ketones instead of glucose. You will use up some muscle stores initially, but they will drop to about 0.2 kg per day (negligible) when your body enters "protein sparing" mode where you begin to work from your fat stores and your body basically "digests" adipose tissue and other junk (hence the theory of detoxification and fasting). If you were to continue fasting beyond these extra reserves (and Americans have PLENTY...) you would begin to lost muscle mass and become unhealthy. A 10-30 day fast is fine, and having suffered from eating disorders myself, it can do wonders in "resetting" your mindset and giving you a fresh start, especially if you have been eating poorly or binge eating. You will lose about 1-2 lbs initially during the first week, and then weight drops to about 1/2 lb from that point on. Some will be initially water loss, so don't get too excited at first. It will be hard to exercise on no food-just do some walking or yoga or pilates. I am a marathon runner, and I have been too fatigued to run, but walking works well. Your metabolism will be SLOW after the fast, which is kind of good in a way, because it forces you to eat healthy and stay on track. Good luck!

  43. QUESTION:
My friends amazing weight loss (80lbs in 4 months) is her plan viable?
My friend recently lost a lot of weight like about 80lbs in like 16 weeks losing about 5lbs a week. She is 31 and 5 foot 5 inches tall and started at 220lbs and went down to 140lbs she hope to lose another 5lbs and then just focus on maintenance and toning. I have seen her in her under ware and apart from a couple of tiny stretch marks on her tummy she looks great no loose skin etc.
When I asked her how she did it she sent me this (Cut and paste from her email to me):
My weight loss plan was real simple. I'm a vegetarian but before I ate a lot of ready meals and was always hungry so snacked on sweets and pastries, cheese and fizzy drinks to keep going etc. I changed my diet so that I ate all home cooked food, all fresh veggies, fruit, home baked wholemeal bead, brown rice, lentils, yogurt etc I had lot's of salads and indian dahls etc and supplemented my diet with a good quality multivitamin and the odd protein shake to help with muscle repair. I drank lot's of water and green tea. My total calories averaged about 1800 a day. I had trouble eating it all sometimes as it seemed so much!
As for working out I did about an hour to an hour and a half of cardio everyday 6 days a week (which is a lot considering I was total couch potato before, but I love it now) mixing it up to keep my body guessing so one day I'd do interval training and the next day I'd do a long moderate intensity walk on the treadmill at an incline. When I got fitter I did spinning classes, which were tough but made a big diffrence. I also did resistance training with free weights three times a week about 30 minutes each time. I made sure I got lot's of sleep and had a rest day every week. I tend to put on muscle quickly so I think that really helped me to drop the weight fast so resistance training is not optional.
I used the Sauna at the gym a couple of times a weel as well, which I think helped and had a course of 3 full body wraps to help inch loss and skin tighening as well as using body brushing and self massage with oils every day to keep my skin nice.
Simple but tough, consistancy was the key!

    ---End of her email ----

Now I need to lose weight as well but it just seems unrealistic to me that she lost 80lbs in four months doing just the above and she has no lose sagging skin, even her boobs look nice. What do you think is this really possible? Do you think she is lying or was she just very lucky to have lost so much weight so quick?

    • ANSWER:
It's possible. When you are that heavy - the weight tends to drop off quite quickly at the beginning.

You can do it if you really put the effort in. The exercise is the most important. If you just diet then you probably will get stretchmarks and sagging skin. You need to try and keep everything tight.

      Good luck

  46. QUESTION:
Weight loss in a safe and timely manner...?
My name is Mya, I am 19 years old 5’6 and weigh 244lbs . I am in serious need of help with losing weight. I don’t mind working out but when I go to the gym after 20 min. I have to leave- not because I can’t take the burn; but because the pressure from my weight on my legs is so heavy I can’t take it.
I am not going to lie and say I have tried everything, I haven’t in fact I am sure there is a lot I haven’t tried, but I have 3 months to lose at least 65lbs so if you have any suggestions please, please help me. I have a hard time with what I eat. I know it’s a major contributor to my weight gain, or inability to lose weight. I don’t eat eggs, noodles, rice, anything from the water, any tofu or vegetarian stuff, any other meats besides ground beef, and certainly not some veggies. I sometimes get the naked drinks and carrots or apple packs- and I constantly drink water… but other than that my diet is pretty unhealthy! Is there anything out there for me?
I have a serious line of heart attacks in my family for the women. Every woman in my family has had heart attacks but my mom, me and my sisters. I do have blood pressure issues and am currently taking blood pressure med. I am not looking for diet pills or an easy way of losing weight. If you have an easy way, that won’t just take weight away and I gain it back later… Please share!!! I don’t have any money for fancy diet plans so I can’t do Jenny Craig or nutisystem. I need an at home, day-to-day plan.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and offer any help. I really need it and even more so, I appreciate it!

    • ANSWER:
Eating celery, fish and salad will help a lot when wanting to lose weight. They are not magical foods that make you lose weight, but by eating those you will not eat stuff that does make you gain weight.
Same as drinking water instead of drinking beer,., wine, carbonated drinks.

I'm a 14 year old girl and I'm 5'5 and 132 lbs. I want to lose weight durning the summer so I'm going to start a workout routine.
Sunday: rest day, or just go swimming
Monday: this exercise DVD(50 minutes and I burn about 400 calories) and run a mile( I'm going to work myself up to 2 miles a day)
Tuesday: another workout DVD( 1 hour and I burn about 500 calories) and id go for a 45 minute bike ride
Wednesday: run a mile and a half, swim for an hour, and do a 25 minute workout DVD( burns about 200 calories)
Thursday: 45 minute bike ride, run a mile, and I might swim
Friday: the second workout DVD( burn about 500 calories) and then running a mile and a half
Saturday: the first workout DVD( burns about 400 calories), swim, and then run
Is that a good workout plan? How long will it take o see results? And what's a good diet plan for a vegetarian? Also any tips on weight loss, exercise and sticking to a diet plan?

    • ANSWER:
Sounds good, you have a lot of cardio on there though, you might get tired throughout the week! If you do feel extremely tired, don't feel bad about taking a rest day!

And remember! The ONLY way to lose weight is burning more calories than you consume (not to say you need to burn 2000+ calories as your body burns 1500+ a day on digestion and upkeep). Abs are made in the kitchen!

Since you're a vegetarian, just make sure you are getting enough protein to help your muscles recover effectively!
